Tell us about yourself and your books!
Originally from Wisconsin, I’m currently living in Ohio where I’m studying for a degree in literature from Antioch College. Along with my writing, I’m an avid paranormal investigator with almost seven years experience now. My books, surprisingly, are not horror. They’re not far off though, mostly sticking in the thriller genre. I’ve strayed from that genre a few times, but it has mostly stayed in the thriller/suspense. Right now I’m expanding a little. Just started writing my first paranormal horror novel, and it’s a great experience!
How long have you been writing, and how did you become involved in writing?
I’ve been a writer for pretty much all my life, coming up with stories whenever I had a chance to daydream since grade school. It wasn’t until high school that I started actually writing them down. During my freshman year, I wrote my first novel-length manuscript. A year later I wrote another. I started self-publishing in 2013 with a series of crime thrillers. Since then, most everything I have written has been novel or novella-length and landed online in the self-published world.
What are you working on at the moment?
Right now I’m working on my first paranormal horror novel, with the working title Over the Ha-Ha Walls. After a long time trying to figure out how to put my personal paranormal experiences into a piece of fiction, I think I finally figured it out. I’m about 20,000 words into it and it’s going very well. It’s nice to diversify genres sometimes. I would suggest every writer give it a try at some point.
Did you have any goals with writing, and if so, how well do you feel you’ve achieved them? What do you hope to achieve in the future?
When I first started, I had all sorts of writing goals. At first, all I wanted was to successfully publish a book, and that was almost twenty books ago now. Now my goal is to just let writing keep taking me in the direction I’m going now. Self-publishing has been growing and developing as a legitimate publishing medium for years now, and I’m excited to see where it’ll be, and where I’ll be, five, ten, twenty years down the road. I have no defined goals for the future besides keeping on writing. If a writer never quits, they’ll get where they want to go.
How long does it take you to write a book?
That depends on what I’m trying to do with the story. Some of my shorter novellas or novels take only a month or two to write. More recently I’ve been writer longer books (80-100k words) and that has taken longer. The books I have most recently completed took about three and a half months. I try to write as much as I can everyday, often doing 1,000 – 3,000 words per day.
What are the hardest parts of being an author for you?
The hardest part is everything that comes after the actual writing. Editing is a long, hard process, but one I need to do.
